We are learning about time and temperature. I would like to learn more about temperature and how to convert temperature from Celcius to Farenheit and also about the different time zones.
We'll be looking at both of these things during this unit Hannah. Mrs. Breeds.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
Today I learnt about how time zones work. The time is different around the world because the sun can't be in all parts of the world at once. There is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is what all the time zones in the world are based on. If a country is in 1 time zone to the right of Greenwich Mean Time it is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and if it is in 1 time zone to the left is is 1 hour behind Greenwich Mean Time. An exampleis if it is 8:30am in Barcelona it is 8:30pm in New Zealand.
A good explanation of GMT. You could've clarified your explanation by stating that Spain is 12 time zones behind NZ.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about exchange rates for currency.
We are learning about how different countries have different currencies. For example Indonesia uses rupiah, and South Africa uses rand. If you had $100 NZ dollars and you wanted Australian dollars, you would have to go 100 x 0.8883 = 88.83 So you would have $88.83 in Australian money which is equivalent to $100 NZ dollars.

W.A.L.T. Use algebraic thinking to solve decimal sucbtraction problems.
Today we learnt a strategy on how to solve decimal subtraction problems. Here is an example:
5.5 - 3.99
+0.01 +0.01
5.51 - 4 = 1.51
This is a really good strategy because it is quick and easy to use and it is accurate.
I am pleased you find this strategy quick and easy to use. It is certainly one of my favourites. Very useful for solving complex subtraction problems. TC

W.A.L.T. We are learning to use a number of different problem solving strategies to solve complex problems.
Today I learnt that there are a number of different problem solving strategies that I didnt know about. I learnt that you can make a list or chart if you have little bits of information and you can draw diagrams and graphs to help you solve a problem. My goal is to learn to use at least three different strategies in different problems rather than using the same one constantly.
A great goal Hannah. It should also help you to have another way of approaching those more difficult problems you encounter at the Olympiad and at mathletics.

Today we looked at what we did know, didnt know, and what we thought we knew about statistics. I found that I wasnt quite sure about some types of graphs and about the different types of data. I would like to learn about the different types of graphs that go with different types of data. I know how to draw some different types of graphs.

26 April
Today I learnt about dot plots, stem and leaf graphs, and scatterplots. I already knew what stem and leaf graphs and dot plots were but I wasnt sure about the scatterplots so I learnt what they were and how to draw them. I also learnt that there are 4 types of bar graphs. There is a bar graph, a column graph, a histogram and a double bar graph.
Great! Hopefully you will be able to use these types of graphs in your statistical investigation. Clare
And remember Hannah a scatterplot shows the relatiionship between two variables so as Mum has said it is certainly a great graph to be able to use in your investigations

WALT: Draw a histogram.
Today I learnt how to draw and interpret a histogram. I think that a histogram shows both continuous and discrete data. It can show both depending on the question asked. A histogram is a type of bar graph. A histogram is very useful for both counting and measuring data.
I can't remember what a histogram is ...maybe you can show me! Clare
A histogram only shows continuous data and a column graph only shows discrete data - that is an important difference between the two.

I know what discrete and continuous data is but I think that I have trouble deciding what graph shows what kind of data.
Histograms/line graphs mainly show continuous, bar/pie mainly discrete data but there are cross overs which we will look at and why.

W.A.L.T. Evaluate statements about graphs.
Today I learnt how to evaluate statements about graphs. I found that I knew most things but some were more difficult than others.
Can you be a bit more specific?

W.A.L.T. Draw and interpret box and whisker plots.
Today I learnt how to draw and interpret a box and whisker plot. I now understand what an upper quartile and a lower quartile are and also what interquartile range is. I also now know what a box and whisker plot can display.
What can they display? Mum
Box and Whisker plots can display the range of data, the median, and the upper quartile and the lower quartile. Box and whisker plots also display where the majority of the data is.
Awesome explanation Hannah. They are great for showing large numbers of data eg the whole schools PAT maths reports are shown on a box and whisker graph. It would also have been a good graph to use with the base line data exercise I gave you.

This week I completed my statistical investigation questionnaire. I found this challenging because there are so many extra things that you have to put on a questionnaire.
This is important so that you hav I e valid data and can compare different sets of information.
Great that you have recognised the challenges Hannah and I know that your investigation and its findings will be interesting to read. Enjoyed reading your journal. Mr C

I need to practice........... my fractions about if one is bigger than the other because that was the question I got wrong.
I need to improve.............on my fractions so that I can get 100%
I have got most of my data back for my statistical investigation and I have loaded it onto a spreadsheet. Some of the results are quite interesting!
I bet they are. Don't forget we are going to report back to Arthur Miller on their information as well. We can send them parts of the investigation that are pertinent to their students. See me and we will organise.
